Power, Volume, Mute, Input Buttons

All remotes must be programmed to work with your TV. Power, Volume, Mute, Input, will *not* work unless they are programmed.

TV-specific buttons can be programmed using the TiVo on-screen instructions. To find those instructions, please see the chart below:

Pairing an RF Remote (Roamio, Slide Pro, Bolt Remote) with your TiVo or Mini

If you have an RF-capable TiVo remote (Roamio remote, Bolt remote or Slide Pro remote) and are having trouble setting it up in RF mode, please see below.

TiVo Mini RF : if you need help pairing your remote, please see the "TiVo Mini and Premiere Instructions" on this page. (Note that the instructions are for TiVo's Slide Pro remote but they apply equally to the remote included with your Mini RF.) If you need help programming your remote for your TV's volume, power, mute, please click here.

To use the learning features of a Slide Pro Remote, see this page. For backlight instructions for a Slide Pro Remote, see here.

NOTE: If your remote is not adjusting the volume repeatedly when you hold down the volume up/down button, this is NOT a problem with your remote. You simply need to find a different remote programming code for your TV. Some codes require one press per volume tick (up or down); other codes allow you to hold the button down. Just go through the remote instructions again and choose a different code.

How to set up your RF-capable TiVo remote in RF mode:

All TiVo remotes that have RF capability will flash an yellow light if it is set up in RF mode. If you press TiVo buttons on your remote and the light is glowing RED, then you are not set up in RF mode.

To set the remote up in RF mode, follow the instructions below.

If you have a Bolt, TiVo Roamio, Roamio OTA, Roamio Plus, Roamio Pro or TiVo Mini with serial number starting A93, follow these instructions:

Prepare the DVR for pairing

Navigate to the Remote Control Pairing screen:

TiVo Model Menu Path (From TiVo Central)
BOLT UESs & Roamio Series DVRs Settings & Messages > Remote, CableCARD & Devices > Remote Control Setup > Remote Control Pairing
Mini Settings & Messages > Remote & Devices > Remote Control Setup > Part 5: Remote control pairing

The UES/DVR is now in New Pairing ModeĀ and should automatically pair with any RF remote within 3 feet. If it does not, manually pair the remote.

Manually Pair the RF remote

Press and hold the TiVo+Back buttons until the activity indicator light turns red. The remote control will then send pairing requests for 30 seconds (as indicated by the flashing amber activity indicator).

The remote will pair with any DVR that is accepting pairing requests.

NOTE: If pairing is unsuccessful, the remote will return to its original state (either paired or unpaired).

If you have a TiVo Premiere, Premiere XL, Premiere XL4 Premiere Elite or TiVo Mini with serial number starting A92, follow these instructions:

1) Plug the remote's dongle into the TiVo's USB port and hold down the button for a few seconds until the light starts flashing.
2) Hold down the TiVo and Back buttons on the remote for a few seconds until the light at the top of the remote illuminates and is solid.
3) Wait for the remote to pair. Once it does, the remote will now flash yellow, indicating that it is in RF mode.

TROUBLESHOOTING RF REMOTE PAIRING

The amber light on my remote blinks for several seconds whenever I press a button

In the event that you have paired an RF remote to your Roamio Series DVR, but you later have to replace the remote, the new remote will not yet be paired to your DVR. It will automatically revert to IR mode. When this is the case, the amber light will blink for 30 seconds after every button press, but the functionality of the remote will otherwise be unchanged.

To make the blinking yellow light stop, and then pair the remote to your DVR for RF functionality:

  • Press TiVo + Red C until the TiVo mascot's antennae blink red.
  • Now press any button and confirm that the TiVo mascot's antennae blink red with each button press (it should no longer flash amber).
  • Press the Live TV button.
  • Press Clear, Enter, Clear, 221, Clear (this will send a signal to clear any RF pairings on the DVR).
  • Hold down TiVo + Back on the remote until the TiVo mascot's antennae blink amber (the remote is now ready to pair with the DVR).
  • Now press any button on the remote and confirm that the TiVo mascot's antennae blink amber with each button press.
  • The remote is now paired in RF mode with the DVR.
Global reset

The Global Reset function unpairs the RF remote from the paired UES/DVR, then clears any other remote settings, such as IR codes for your television or other A/V device. Use this function to unpair a remote and return it to the out-of-box settings.

IMPORTANT: You will need both the paired RF remote and the UES/DVR to perform a global reset. If your paired remote has been lost or damaged, you will need to use a new remote in IR mode to put the UES/DVR in a pairing state, then pair the new remote to the UES/DVR. For instructions, see To Pair a different remote to your DVR.

To perform a global reset:

  1. Press and hold the TiVo + TV Power buttons until the activity indicator blinks red.
  2. Press Thumbs Down three times, then press Enter.

The activity indicator will flash red three times if the global reset is successful.

Specific Troubleshooting Instructions for VOX Remotes:

If you are having problems getting your VOX remote to pair with any unit, first try this:

Navigate to your TiVo's remote pairing page, and once there, put your remote in pairing mode also by holding TiVo and Back until the light goes red. Then make sure it's very near the TiVo - even sit it right on top.

Test by pressing the Microphone button.

If that doesn't help, try this:

Step 1 - Put Remote in IR mode by pressing TiVo and C until you get three red flashes. Press LIVETV to test, aiming it right at the TiVo.

Step 2 - Still aiming right at the TiVo, press these buttons: Clear - Enter - Clear - 2 2 1 - Clear (you likely won't see a visual indcation of this action)

Step 3 - Pause for 10 seconds, then press Channel Up. You should see a red and a yellow flash. Wait a couple of seconds and press Channel Up again and the light should flash yellow instead of red.

Test - Test by pressing the Microphone button.

If you are still having trouble, please visit this TiVo VOX Remote FAQ and troubleshooting page.
