TiVo Frequently Asked Questions - TiVo FAQ

Dual Tuner (DT) TiVo FAQ
TCD649080 / TCD649180

The dual-tuner 649080 and 649180 TiVo DVRs will record two shows at the same time, with some limitations. The table below will tell you whether you will be able to take advantage of the two tuners to record two shows. Essentially, if you have only cable, you can (again, with some limitations). If you have cable+satellite, you can. If you have only satellite, you cannot.

Input Sources: The Dual Tuner TiVo has the same video inputs on the back of the unit as the previous standalone TiVos. There are two internal differences that make the new functionality work: 1) the RF input is split to two tuners and 2) the unit can record from these two at once, or one of these and the tuner on the S-Video/Composite Video input.

Programming Source(s)

Channels You Can Record on the First Tuner (S-Video or Composite Video)

DIRECTV only (consider a DIRECTV TiVo which has two inputs also, but no networking features)

Any you receive through your DIRECTV receiver

None

DISH Network only Any you receive through your DISH receiver None
DIRECTV or DISH plus Cable (no box) Any you receive through your DIRECTV or DISH receiver Any you receive through your cable feed
DIRECTV or DISH plus Cable (with box) Any you receive through your DIRECTV or DISH receiver All unscrambled, non-digital channels, which are generally channels 2 through 99. As a test, you can plug the coax cable that goes into your box directly into your TV and see which channels you receive. If you use the second tuner with a straight coax cable, you would not be able to use the TiVo to control both your satellite box and cable box.
Antenna None (the DT units won't record from antenna signals) None (the DT won't record from antenna signals)
